Gridlock Alert Days – Please Use Public Rail Transportation
This week, the United Nations General Assembly is meeting. As a result of this event, New York City will experience Gridlock Alert Days, characterized by high levels of traffic congestion due to heightened security measures and street closures.
Most of the gridlock will be concentrated in the vicinity of the United Nations on the east side of Manhattan; however, people traveling by car into Manhattan from Long Island or LaGuardia or JFK airports will likely experience significant traffic delays.
THE GOOD NEWS:
New York City has one of the best metro rail systems in the world. Traffic delays can be avoided by using these systems. To ensure a smoother visit, we strongly encourage all visitors to use public rail transportation; subways and commuter rail (LIRR and Metro North), instead of driving or taking taxis/rideshares.
From LaGuardia Airport:
Option 1: Take the free Q70 bus to the Roosevelt Avenue / 74th Street Station. This is the first stop and many of the bus passengers will be getting off at that station. From there take the Manhattan bound E train to the 7th Avenue station. The Sheraton New York Times Square is a one-minute walk from the 7th Avenue Subway Station.
Option 2: Take a taxi / ride share to the Roosevelt Avenue / 74th Street Station. This is the first stop and many of the bus passengers will be getting off at that station. From there take the Manhattan bound E train to the 7th Avenue station. The Sheraton New York Times Square is a one-minute walk from the 7th Avenue Subway Station.
From JFK Airport:
Option 1: Take the AirTrain ($8.50 pay as you exit) to the Jamaica train station and from there take the LIRR (to Penn Station). From Penn Station you can either take an uptown 1 subway train to 50th Street or exit Penn Station at 8th Avenue and take a taxi to the hotel.
Option 2: Take the AirTrain ($8.50 pay as you exit) to the Jamaica train station and from there take the E subway line to 7th Avenue. The Sheraton New York Times Square is a one-minute walk from the 7th Avenue Subway Station.
